History - from a New York German deli to your dining room table

In 1905, two years after arriving in the United States, a German immigrant named Richard Hellmann opened up a delicatessen in New York City. His wife's delectable recipe for mayonnaise was featured in salads and sold in the deli, and the condiment quickly became very popular.

Originally, two versions of the recipe were sold with a blue ribbon on one jar. This recipe became so popular that it became part of the iconic label we use today. Hellmann’s is produced in Canada using local ingredients such as Canadian eggs, and canola oil from the Canadian prairies.
